Omnipaque in CT – use of

Patient information A-Z

This information is for all patients prescribed Omnipaque before or during CT examinations.

Your doctor has arranged for you to have a CT scan and has prescribed Omnipaque as part of the procedure. Omnipaque is a drug, containing iodine, which functions as a contrast medium to highlight areas to be investigated. It is used to show clearly on CT scans the area your doctor wants to investigate.

How do I take Omnipaque?

  • Dilute 5mls of Omnipaque in 300mls of water.
  • Take the required amount of drinks over the number of days as detailed in your appointment letter.
  • You may also be given more Omnipaque to drink 30 minutes before your scan when you arrive in the department. Your appointment letter will tell you how early to arrive for your appointment.

Does Omnipaque have any side effects?

All drugs may cause some side effects. Most people who receive Omnipaque cope well and experience few, if any, side effects. It is important to note any new symptoms after taking Omnipaque and discuss them with the radiographer. The department’s contact details are at the bottom of the page.

Some people may experience nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, skin rashes and very rarely an anaphylactic/allergic type reaction. If this happens to you, stop taking the Omnipaque and contact your GP or the CT department.

Can I take other medicines with Omnipaque?

  • Continue to take your regular medication as prescribed by your doctor unless otherwise informed.

Is there any situation when I shouldn’t take Omnipaque?

  • If you are hypersensitive to iodine
  • If you are, or think you may be, pregnant

If you are subsequently tested for a thyroid disorder always tell your doctor. Omnipaque may make the test or treatment less effective for several weeks.
