Infection and immunity

Led by Professor Ken Smith

Professor Ken SmithWe are applying the strengths of Cambridge's basic immunological research to selected clinical problems in the fields of immune-mediated and infectious disease, and translating the results into new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Work will focus on:

  1. Immune-mediated diseases such as autoimmune vasculitis, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) and immune-mediated lung disease.

Groups supported by the theme are implementing novel therapies and developing new diagnostic monitoring of autoimmune disease. Studies on the role of neutrophils in lung diseases, and on the genetics of IBD promise to improve our understanding of these important clinical conditions.

  2. Infectious Diseases

We are studying persistent virus infection such as CMV to improve disease control, and are developing novel diagnostic tests to improve management of infectious diseases in developing countries.
