Title of talk: “Arthritis, Synovitis and Osteitis - Different Aspects in the Pathophysiology of Joint Inflammation”
Prof. Schett, who currently heads the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, was previously at the University of Vienna where he worked with Prof. E.F. Wagner whose early use of gene targeted mice shed light on many aspects of musculoskeletal biology. His work has concentrated on the involvement of cytokines in both joint and bone disease, with a particular interest in RANK ligand, the critical factor in osteoclastogenesis, and its natural antagonist, OPG. His interest in RANK ligand led to a period as a senior scientist with Amgen at Thousand Oaks where the company has developed the antibodies against this cytokine which are now in clinical use. He has wide-ranging interests across the whole spectrum of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, and has also contributed to the cardiovascular field (OPG levels correlate with cardiovascular risk factor). Prof. Schett has published ~150 papers in the last 5 years.
