NIHR Flexibility and Sustainability Funding | Eastern England Diabetes Local Research Network | West Anglia Comprehensive Local Research Network |

Research projects in the NHS are supported by the UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN), which was established to support clinical research and to facilitate the conduct of trials and other well-designed studies across the UK.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) is one of the four networks that comprise the UKCRN. It covers topic-specific clinical research networks – including those for cancer, diabetes and stroke – primary care research networks and 25 NIHR comprehensive local research networks (CLRNs).

Both the Eastern England Diabetes Local Research Network and West Anglia CLRN are hosted by Cambridge University NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust. Investigators who want to find out more about either network should follow the links provided on this page.

NIHR Flexibility and Sustainability Funding (FSF)

NIHR FSF is a funding stream introduced by the Department of Health in 2008 in order to attract, develop and retain the research workforce necessary for delivering high-quality health research. It’s available to research-active NHS organisations and to all NIHR research networks.

The funding is for up to one year, and can only be used to fund salary costs.

This year both the Eastern England Diabetes Local Research Network and West Anglia CLRN have been allocated FSF.

Eastern England Diabetes Local Research Network

The Diabetes Research Network (DRN) supports clinical research into diabetes in the UK. Working together with people with diabetes, their carers, the public, clinicians and researchers, the DRN's primary goal is to achieve benefits for people with diabetes, or at risk of developing diabetes, through excellence in clinical research.

The network aims to achieve this by facilitating well-designed studies of diabetes, including those for prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The Eastern England Diabetes Local Research Network provides support to local studies in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex.

West Anglia Comprehensive Local Research Network

Following the government’s research and development strategy Best Research for Best Health, a range of changes has been introduced for studies eligible for inclusion in the UKCRN Portfolio.

The CLRNs are implementing the most significant of these changes including:

  • The funding that is available and the procedure for accessing this funding – CLRNs will now award funding for Programmed Activities and NHS Support Costs.

  • The staffing and facilities support that is available to investigators – CLRNs will fund specialist staff, including research nurses and facilitators, to support studies.

  • The way NHS R&D permission is obtained – a new NIHR Coordinated System for gaining NHS Permission is being introduced. CSP is a consistent, standardised process for gaining NHS permission in England for UKCRN portfolio eligible studies. For more information on NIHR CSP, please visit West Anglia CLRN NIHR CSP.

  • HR Procedures for investigators – we’re leading on the new HR procedures for researchers, including the introduction of the research passport system.
