NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research - Programme Development Grants

The NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research invite proposals for Competition 2 of the NIHR Programme Development Grants. Programme Development Grants provide funding of between £20k and £100k over a period of 6-18 months to enable research teams to undertake the preparatory work that will position them to submit a successful Programme Grant application in a subsequent funding competition.  

The deadline for applications is Monday 30 November 2009.

NIHR Health Service Research Programme

The NIHR Health Services Research (HSR) programme invites proposals for its first open call. All types of study proposals expected to enhance knowledge and understanding in the field of health services research will be funded by the programme.

NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) Programme

The NIHR RfPB Programme invites applications for projects in health services research and public health. RfPB is a nationally co-ordinated funding stream for regionally commissioned research. Projects within scope will study the way that NHS services are provided and used; evaluate whether interventions are effective and provide value for money; examine whether alternative means for providing healthcare would be more beneficial in terms of cost and effectiveness; and/or formally assess innovations and developments in healthcare which will benefit patients. Grants are funded up to 36 months in duration with a total maximum cost of £250k. 

Registration of intention to submit in Competition 11 should be made by 11 December 2009. The deadline for submission of applications is 22 January 2009.

Obesity Joint Themed Call Now Open

The National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) and Public Health Research (NIHR PHR) programmes are inviting obesity evaluation research proposals. The Office for the Strategic Co-ordination of Health Research has prioritised obesity for further research and Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives: A cross-government research and surveillance plan for England was published in 2008.

 

Research proposals to this call must be within the remit of the HTA or PHR programme. Both programmes focus on evaluation, with an interest in cost-effectiveness. The research should be designed to inform NHS and/or public health decision-makers.

 

The HTA programme evaluates interventions in the NHS and the PHR programme evaluates public health interventions delivered in other settings. The call is open to evidence syntheses, pilot and feasibility studies as well as full primary evaluation studies.

The deadline for receiving all applications is 1pm on Wednesday 20 January 2010. The precise scope of the call is outlined in the joint specification which is available from the NETSCC website.

6th Call for Stream 1 - i4i Feasibility study

The Invention for Innovation (i4i) Programme wishes to invite project proposals of up to 12 months to determine if prior basic research or an innovative use of an existing technology from a different industry sector can be used to meet an existing or emerging healthcare need.

 

The 6th Call for i4i Stream 1 opens on Wednesday 19 May 2010.

 

Stream 1 proposals must be submitted electronically no later than 5pm on Friday 2 July 2010.

NIHR NHS Physical Environment Research Programme

 The NHS Physical Environment Research Programme invites research proposals that will contribute to the built environment and non-clinical services and support emerging National Service Frameworks and ministerial priorities. Proposals are welcome from the NHS, companies, consultancies and academic institutions.  The closing date for applications is 18 December 2009.

NIHR SDO - Scoping studies in emergency planning in health care

 The NIHR Service Delivery Organisation invites proposals for a scoping study in emergency planning in health care, to include:

  • A literature review of existing research.
  • Identification of emergency planning research within health and non-health sectors within the UK and other countries.
  • Highlighting gaps in the existing evidence base.
  • Engaging with relevant stakeholders to identify issues of practice and policy relevance and where further evidence is needed.
  • Ensuring the review is relevant to the current UK context.
  • Recommending themes for further research.

 

Funding may be of up to 12 months’ duration. Applications are welcomed from multi-disciplinary teams, which should include a mix of disciplines appropriate to this topic. The closing date for proposals is 23 December 2009.

NIHR SDO Programme – Responsive call

The SDO programme invites research proposals in three main areas:

  • Follow-on studies to existing SDO or NIHR HTA research

  • Evidence synthesis (which draw on past primary research within the SDO programme and/or on research funded elsewhere)

  • Scoping reviews for future research needs (aimed at identifying and tackling major topic areas of future research need relevant to the SDO programme and its mission).

Projects will be funded up to 24 months duration and up to £300,000 in cost. The closing date for outline proposals is 18 March 2010.

DH PRP - Pre-Pregnancy Health and Care in England: Exploring Implementation and Public Health Impact

The Department of Health Policy Research Programme (PRP) invites research proposals that can deliver high quality evidence about the organisational and implementation context of pre-pregnancy health and care before and between pregnancies and the public health impact in England. The deadline for applications is 13 January 2010.

Outline proposals for HTA Clinical Evaluation and Trials

 Researchers are invited to submit outline proposals for evaluation studies falling within the remit of the HTA programme to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of health technologies in, or likely to be in, NHS practice. This includes feasibility, pilot studies, proposals for evidence synthesis, and clinical trials. Studies will address questions of direct relevance to clinical practice in the NHS and have outcomes that matter to patients.

 

Outline proposals for evaluation studies and trials are accepted on an ongoing basis, with an online web proposal form available on the HTA programme website at any time.

 

Applications are considered four times a year. The next cut-off deadline for proposals to reach the NETSCC, HTA offices is before 1pm on 14 January.

DH PRP - Evaluation of NHS Health Checks

Putting Prevention First – vascular checks: risk assessment and management, published in 2008, sets out proposals for implementation of a uniform and universal vascular risk assessment and management programme for people in England between 40 and 74. As part of a programme of monitoring and evaluation, full proposals are now invited for the following two studies.

(a) Evaluation of the NHS Health Checks programme -
Exploring implementation

Research is required to explore the implementation of the NHS Health Check programme at PCT level and understand the context behind different models of provision.

(b) Evaluation of the NHS Health Checks programme - Analysing trends

Using existing data sets, analyses of trend data on key outcome and intermediate indicators are required. This will provide a backdrop to other evaluation activity. Analyses should have a specific focus on inequalities in health. 

The deadline for full applications is 5.00 pm on Monday 15 February 2010.

EME Programme

The EME programme is funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and managed by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) as the lead organisation for evaluation trials and studies under the coordinated MRC-NIHR strategy for translational research. NIHR SDO Programme - Patient safety in healthcare organisations 

 The SDO programme invites proposals on aspects of patient safety particularly in the following topic areas:

  • translating knowledge about patient safety into service delivery
  • patient/user involvement in safety improvement
  • financial costs and benefits and trade-offs in patient safety
  • boundaries between care processes, services and organizations

 

Approximately £2 million funding is available. The closing date for outline proposals is 24 March 2010.

NIHR PHR - Commissioned research

 The NIHR Public Health Research programme (PHR) invites research proposals in the following areas:

  • Regeneration programmes.

  1. EU’s Innovative Medicines Initiative will be launched officially on 30 October 2009.

     

    Topics under this call include:

    • Imaging biomarkers for anticancer drug development

    • New tools for target validation to improve drug efficacy

    • Molecular biomarkers: accelerating cancer therapy development and refining patient care

    • Identification and development of rapid point of care microbiologic diagnostic tests to facilitate clinical practice and conduct of clinical trials

    • Drug/disease modelling: library and framework

    • Open pharmacological space

    • Electronic Health Records (EHR) to support and enhance medical research

    • Understanding aberrant adaptive immunity mechanisms in human chronic immune-mediated diseases: rheumatoid arthritis (RA),

    • translational research in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and RA like diseases: bridging between animal models and humans

     

    The EU’s Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) aims to support more efficient discovery and development of medicines by supporting research into the drug development process.

     

    For the period from 2008 - 2017, €2billion has been allocated to the IMI. Of this, €1billion is from the EU and €1 billion is provided by industry.

     

    Its aim is to accelerate the development and discovery of new medicines in the fields of cancer, diabetes and inflammatory and infectious diseases and to enhance knowledge management through Electronic Health Records (EHR).

     

    NHS organisations are eligible to apply as part of an ‘Applicant Consortia’. This should include for example academia, SMEs, patient organisations and companies which are not already members of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA). There is a strong emphasis on the involvement of pre-clinical and clinical scientists.

  3. The European Commission has launched a call to fund for advanced research activity in the field of life sciences, and social sciences and the humanities. These may be of interest to you.

  4. FP7-HEALTH-2010-Alternative-Testing

    There has been a recently funding development around the FP7 Call for Proposals on Alternative Testing Strategies “FP7-HEALTH-2010-Alternative-Testing". The COLIPA (The Cosmetics Industry Association) has announced that they are committed to matching the European Unions own contribution of EUR 25 million for 7 of the call topics of the FP7-HEALTH-2010-Alternative-Testing.

    The identified topics are:

     

    • 4.2.9.1 Optimisation of current methodologies and development of novel methods to achieve functional differentiation of human-based target cells in vitro, EUR 4 000 000 – EUR 5 000 000;

    • 4.2.9.2 Exploitation of organ-simulating cellular devices as alternatives for long-term toxicity testing, EUR 4 000 000 – EUR 5 000 000;

    • 4.2.9.3 Establishment of endpoints and intermediate markers in human-based target cells with relevance for repeated dose systemic toxicity testing; EUR 3 500 000 – EUR 4 500 000;

    • 4.2.9.4 Computational modelling and estimation techniques; EUR 2 500 000 – EUR 3 500 000;

    • 4.2.9.5 Systems biology for the development of predictive causal computer models; EUR 4 000 000 – EUR 5 000 000;

    • 4.2.9.6 Integrated data analysis and servicing; EUR 2 000 000 – EUR 3 000 000; and

    • 4.2.9.7 Coordination action; Max EUR 1 500 000



    The key points to note regarding this scheme is that:

    • Eligible costs will be funded up to 100%: 50% EU funding and 50% COLIPA funding for all cost categories;

    • For each of the topics, the minimum and maximum amounts mentioned on the call fiche only relate to the EC contribution;

    • FP 7 rules apply for proposal submission, evaluation, GA negotiation and reporting;

    • Negotiation will take place only between the Commission and the project partners on the basis of the evaluation outcome;

    • FP7 Grant Agreement and COLIPA stand-alone research agreement (No further negotiation with Colipa);

    • With regard to IPR, exclusively FP7 rules apply; and

    • No major additional obligations for project reporting: Same report to EC and to COLIPA.

  1. Innovative Medicines Initiative - MRC IMI networking costs scheme

    The deadline of the 8 February 2010 for the Expression of Interest for the Innovative Medicines Initiative second call is fast approaching.
