July's 'You made a difference' awards went to Rachel Nicholas, a midwife sonographer and Kerry Symonds, an HCA on ward A4. Rachel and Kerry were selected from 53 nominations for the award.
Rachel Nicholas receives her award from Mary Archer
Rachel started her nursing career with the trust in 1980. She later trained as a midwife and in January 2009 enrolled on a course to train as a Sonographer, obtaining a postgraduate certificate in medical ultrasound in April 2010. Rachel's nomination was from a patient following a routine 20 week scan: "Rachel made my husband and I feel like we were the only people in the world, explaining absolutely everything she was doing in each moment and reassuring us along the way. We had my mother-in-law and little girl come in at the end and again, although she must do this too many times a day, she treated my little girl and her Grandma like they were the only ones that mattered."
Kerry Symonds with Mary Archer and Gareth Goodier
Kerry started work at the trust three and a half years ago as an HCA on Ward A4. She was nominated for her award by a colleague who observed her during the Perfect Ward project. Her colleague said: "Whilst it is expected that staff will be committed to their patients, I was struck by the levels of kindness shown to a particularly distressed elderly patient. The patient was confused and very demanding yet Kerry showed nothing but consistent levels of kindness, support and effective care no matter how many times she was required to assist the patient."
Diane Payne, one of the winners from June, also received her award.
