Rosie discharge lounge opens

22 July, 2010

A comfortable, spacious lounge area has opened in the Rosie for women and their families to use before and after giving birth. Annie West, lead midwife on the Lady Mary Ward, said the area provides a relaxing space for women who are in the process of being admitted or discharged.

"It works on the same principle as the Day of Surgery unit in the ATC – if a woman is coming in for an elective Caesarean, for example, she doesn't need a bed until after the operation and the admission process can be done in this quiet, comfortable setting. This frees up beds for the women who need it most."

For women in the early stages of labour, there will be exercise balls, as well as tea and coffee-making facilities. "There will be a curtained area where they can change and be examined, as well as sofas provided by the Friends of the Rosie."

Friends spokeswoman Mary Sanders said: "We work to improve the lot of mothers and babies in the Rosie, so we were delighted to be able to help with this project."

If you would like to donate to or join the Friends of the Rosie, please contact Mary on 01223 356 615.
