The neonatal unit is staffed by doctors and nurses 24 hours a day.
Nursing skill mix is varied and consists of :
All of the nurses work shifts, most of the nurses will work a combination of 2 shifts: the day shift commencing at 0745 and finishing at 2015 and the night shift commencing at 1945 and finishing at 0815. Some of the nurses will work shorter shifts.
A neonatologist leads a team of paediatric doctors called specialist registrars and senior house officers who will frequently see your baby and give treatment.

There is one consultant responsible for NICU during weekdays for up to two weeks at a time. Another consultant is responsible for SCBU and post natal wards during weekdays for one week at a time. There will be a different consultant on call each night and at weekends to cover all areas. This means that you may see a number of different consultants during your baby's stay.

Consultant Paediatric Surgeons:
The consultants are supported by a team of Specialty Registrars (StR). These are divided into senior and junior StR’s. The senior StR’s are very experienced doctors at the end of their training. They will supervise the more junior StR’s at the beginning of their training. These doctors work a shift system, so that there is always at least one senior and one junior StR on the unit at all times of the day and night.

The nurse caring for your baby will be able to update you on his or her progress when you visit the unit or by telephone. You can telephone the unit at any time day or night.
Visiting times:
Parents and siblings may visit their baby at any time of the day or night on NICU and SCBU.
Other family and friends restricted to 14.00-16.30 hours and 18.00-20.00 hours
Rest time: 13.00 -14.00.
