Staying close to your baby

Accommodation within the hospital

When babies are admitted to either the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or the Special Care Baby Unit, it is inevitable that they are separated from their parents. This is never easy and so accommodation is provided for parents within the hospital.

We have five family rooms for overnight stays on the Unit. These can be used by parents when they are preparing to take their baby home or when they need to be close to their baby for any reason. Attached to these rooms, we have a sitting room with the facility for making snacks and hot drinks, and bathrooms. These rooms are booked on a daily basis because they are in high demand.

Accommodation is limited. We need to prioritise and make sure we have room for parents whose baby needs them most. It is possible that you will be asked to vacate the accommodation because there is a family with a greater need to stay with their baby at that time.

On the Cambridge University Hospitals site, we are fortunate to have the use of Acorn House. This is for the parents (and siblings) of either unwell babies or children admitted to the Rosie.

Here, you can stay for short periods of time free of charge; parents find it can also provide a welcome break from being in the NICU constantly.

Each room has a phone link to the ward, all bedding is provided and there is a playroom for older siblings. The nurse who looks after your baby will be able to give you more details.

The house is run by the Sick Children's Trust and is funded by donations. The House Manager is Linda Walker Tel: hospital extension 6806

Pemberton house primarily for the relatives of patients at Addenbrooke's Hospital is also available and is managed by the Frank Lee Centre
