Assisting with your baby's care

Parental involvement

Once you feel comfortable in the SCBU you may want to begin to be involved in providing regular cares for your baby.

Cares are not performed on a strict timetable, they are done as your baby's condition allows. The staff on SCBU will encourage you to provide mouth, eye and nappy care for your baby and will guide and support you through the processes until you begin to feel confident enough to carry out these activities on your own.

Mouth care

The nurse caring for your baby will begin by carrying out your baby's cares, and you can begin by observing. You can observe for as long as you wish until you feel confident to help. Your baby will probably remain attached to monitoring and you may feel nervous at first, but this is perfectly normal. The nurses will be happy to help and support you in the process of becoming more skilled and confident with your baby.
