Communication and decision making

At times, as parents you will be asked to make difficult decisions. To make matters worse, these decisions often must be made quickly. The decision you will be asked to make will be based on information that comes from medical staff. Understanding this information is important for you as parents when making decisions.

At all times of the day and night there will be a nurse, a registrar doctor and a consultant responsible for looking after your baby/babies. If parents want to meet with a consultant, they need to ask the nurse looking after their baby who will arrange for this to happen. For the most of the time the consultant in charge of your baby's care will be able to speak to you on the same day as requested; but certainly no later than the next day. In cases of emergency or where a baby is very ill, then a consultant will usually be available immediately.
