Basic life support

Preparing for home

As part of the transition towards home, parents are offered the chance to have training in basic life support, so that if anything happened to their baby at home they could feel that they could offer some basic life support skills. These skills will show what to do in an emergency situation, what to do if your baby is choking and how to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if your baby were to stop breathing  until emergency help can be sought.  Even though this is a daunting experience, many parents feel reassured following the training, knowing that they would be prepared to react correctly if an emergency situation were to occur. While the training aims to give parents some basic insight into resuscitation techniques, it must be remembered that if an emergency were to occur, emergency services should be contacted on 999 rather than trying to contact the SCBU, NICU or community team.
