The area we cover is vast, extending from the North Norfolk coast to the Thames Estuary covering 7300 square miles and serving a total population of nearly 5 million people.

In 2002 a little over 60,000 babies were born in the East of England accounting for 10% of the total births within England and Wales. In 2006 669,601 babies were born in England and Wales, averaging an 11% increase from 2002.

We cater for 19 hospitals within the East of England each of which provides different levels of care.

 

  • Level 3 units provide the highest level of Intensive care and carry out some surgical procedures. The hospitals classed as level 3 care providers are the Rosie in Cambridge, Norfolk and Norwich and Luton and Dunstable

  • Level 2 units can provide specific Intensive care for babies relevant to each hospital.The hospitals classed as level 2 care providers are Basildon, Watford, Ipswich, Peterborough, Southend, Chelmsford, Hinchingbrooke, Harlow, Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth

  • Level 1 units provide special care but not intensive care.
    The hospitals classed as level 1 care providers are Bedford, Colchester, Bury St Edmunds and Welwyn Garden City

We also provide transfers for Lakenheath's Air Base Hospital.

 

Most emergency transfers are required because the baby needs a greater level of care or surgical intervention that the babies' current hospital cannot provide.
