Clinical staff:

All of our clinical staff have received specialist training in the transport of acute neonates. Most of our staff hold rotational posts between ANTS and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Rosie Maternity Hospital based on the Addenbrooke's site in Cambridge. Having direct involvement in a ward environment provides a good foundation for the development of neonatal care within our service.

Specialist neonatal transport nurse/sister:
Our nursing staff will provide clinical support to the nurse practitioner or registrar during transport. This will include the preparation and administration of drugs, observational procedures and documentation, maintaining respiratory support and the preparation of our transport equipment. They are responsible for reporting incidents that occurred during transport and work with the team in developing the clinical practices of our service. The nursing staff will carry out elective transfers without a nurse practitioner or registrar if the babies' condition is suitable to do so. Elective transfers account for nearly 40% of our transport activity.

Specialist neonatal nurse practitioner/registrar:
Our nurse practitioners and registrars are responsible for the clinical decisions made for the treatment of the baby during transport. For each transport they will obtain clinical information about the babies' condition prior to departure to ensure it is suitable for the baby to be transferred. Each transport request is assessed by our clinical staff to which a decision of what transfer type id required. A dual clinician team consisting of a nurse and either a nurse practitioner or registrar will carry out transports for cases of extremely sick neonates. Transports involving a dual clinician team accounts for just over 60% of our activity.  The nurse practitioners and registrars are involved with auditing clinical data and case reviews with our consultant to monitor and develop the clinical procedures used in neonatal transport.

Specialist neonatal consultant:
Our consultants have overall responsibility for the clinical management of the service and are involved with each transfer providing support for each team.
