Professor Matthew Murray

Honorary consultant paediatric oncologist

I am an honorary consultant paediatric oncologist in the paediatric haematology and oncology team here at CUH, appointed in 2012. My time is split 50 / 50 between clinical and research work, focussing on childhood tumours.
Professor Matthew Murray

Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.

Marie Curie (1867 - 1934)

My current role

I am a university professor and honorary consultant paediatric oncologist, working at both the department of pathology, Cambridge University and department of paediatric haematology and oncology, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

My research programme studies the clinical and molecular aspects of children’s tumours, in particular germ cell tumours (GCTs), and I was the first to demonstrate the utility of specific circulating microRNAs for diagnosis, disease-monitoring and detection of relapse in this disease.

I have attracted >£5.8M of grant funding to date as a principal and co-Investigator and demonstrated national and international leadership in cancer biology.

Previous history

I have worked at CUHNFT since 2003 in various roles, first as a registrar in paediatric haematology and oncology, and then undertaking research, prior to being appointed as a consultant in 2012.
