Perioperative and critical care nursing

Sandra Beil

Surgical Care Practitioner - Perioperative care
Sandra Beil

"This role allows me to experience the best of all worlds".

If you’re interested in working in perioperative care we can offer an enormous range of opportunities. Our area covers theatres and everything relating to surgery from pre-operative assessment, through anaesthesia to recovery. We are also responsible for the John Farman ICU, the neuro-critical care unit, the high and intermediate dependency areas.

Our 32 operating theatres cover a range of surgery, elective and emergency, day and inpatient. We also run a theatre pre-assessment unit facilitating day of surgery admissions across general surgery and orthopaedic arthroplasty. Altogether around 600 staff work across our theatres.

We truly believe that you – our staff – are our greatest asset and provide great opportunities for development. In theatres, for example, registered nurses can develop into anaesthetic or surgical care practitioners, taking on important responsibilities in assisting the medical team. We also offer health care assistants in several areas the opportunity to work up to assistant scrub practitioner role, working autonomously to assist registered practitioners in the recovery room and in pre-assessment.

There are few places more challenging to nurse that on the critical care units. This is a highly skilled team, focussed on delivering great patient care, while helping people through what may be one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

You'll be working in one of three teams. We try to ensure that each patient is always cared for by members of the same team, so you’ll really get to know them and those close to them. As well as the specialist skills needed for caring for critically ill patients, we value communication, helping people understand what is going and assessing the right balance of information for each individual at a given point.

We offer the opportunity for staff to move across all areas of  Perioperative and Critical Care to enhance skills and develop their talents. We’ll encourage you to train further if you wish, including taking undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. In addition we offer leadership and management opportunities following the Harvard Leadership Programme.
