Addenbrooke's services

Welcome to Tissue Typing at Addenbrooke's

Experience working life at Addenbrooke's

The Addenbrooke's Hospital Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (Tissue Typing) laboratory provides a specialist histocompatibility and immunogenetics service for the East of England region and is part of the NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre.

We offer a comprehensive range of molecular and serological techniques to identify Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA), Killer Cell Immunoglobulin-Like Receptor (KIR) typing and immunological sensitisation to HLA. These tests are performed in support of the regional solid organ and stem cell transplant programmes, in the differential diagnosis of HLA associated diseases and in pharmacogenomics (adverse drug reactions).

The laboratory is responsible for the selection of HLA compatible donor and recipient pairs for renal and stem cell transplantation and for HLA typing, HLA specific antibody screening and crossmatching in support of the small intestinal, multi-visceral, hepatic and cardio-thoracic transplant programmes.

Patient information and consent

All genetic testing requires consent. It is the responsibility of the referring clinician to ensure appropriate consent has been obtained for:

  • testing and storage
  • the use of the sample and the information generated from it to be shared with members of the patients family and their health professionals

It should be noted that genetic tests carried out on more than one member of the same family can, under some circumstances, give information concerning their genetic relationship and disease susceptibility. After testing, part of this sample might be used anonymously for the development of new tests and to monitor the quality of laboratory results.

Private patients

We welcome requests for tissue typing tests for patients outside of the UK and National Health Service
