Addenbrooke's Archives

The Hospital Archives of Addenbrooke's holds a substantial and constantly growing collection of material and artefacts dating from 1711.


The type of material held includes:

  • Minutes and accounts of the Trustees of Addenbrooke's Hospital (1740 to 1767).

  • Annual Accounts and lists of subscribers (1767 to 1862).

  • Annual Reports (1863 to present).

  • Minutes of the Board of Governors, Committees and Courts dating from 1766.

  • Patient records and registers from 1876 to today.

  • Photographs from the late 19th century and still being collected today.

  • Press cuttings from 1907, which are still being added to everyday.

  • Archives of the United Cambridge Hospitals, including Mill Road Maternity Hospital (1936 to 1983), The Hunstanton Home of Recovery (1899 to 1967), Brookfields Hospital (1952 to 1967).


Archives of related organisations including:

  • Addenbrooke's Hospital League of Nurses (1950 to 2002)

  • The First Eastern General Hospital (1915 to 1945)

  • British Hospitals Association (Eastern Regional Committee; 1921 to 1948)

  • Association of Hospital Matrons (East Anglian Group; 1944 to 1977)

  • Royal College of Nursing (Cambridge branch; 1928 to 1975)

  • Cambridge Medical Society (1880 to 1928)




Artefacts from the hospital including equipment dating from the 19th century.



A new project to collect printed material relating to:

  • Addenbrooke’s and its related hospitals and organisations.

  • Biographies of staff and patients, past and present.

  • Publications and articles written by or about Addenbrooke’s staff.

  • Reference material.
